The piece features three “Soft Serve Men,” each with their own colors, patterns, and expressions. Huddled together around the white Soft Serve Man in the center, they look almost as if they are posing for a commemorative photo. Soft serve ice cream with faces, arms and legs—and even boots. When you stop to think about it, it is a rather strange sight. Yet in Masaka’s world, somehow it feels perfectly natural. The idea of “taking something familiar and shifting it just slightly somewhere unexpected” is also present in his three-dimensional works. That subtle shift becomes humor, becomes charm, and creates a world that is unmistakably Masaka’s own. The lively color palette is equally striking: vivid mint green and pink, white at the center, and the warm orange of the cones. Different from his clay figures, this work allows you to enjoy Ayumu Masaka’s distinctive humor expressed through lines and color.
